The Secret to Sweet Success

Of the five taste sensations (sweet, sour, bitter, salty and savoury), it’s sweetness that’s regarded as the most pleasurable experience for the body.  It draws us in and tempts us into delicious goodies whether cakes, biscuits or sticky sauces.

It’s little wonder that sweet ingredients are so sought after by the British food manufacturers to add fabulous flavour to their products.  But there’s one product that not only delivers silky sweetness, but is also deliciously rich, creamy and highly versatile – Sweetened Condensed Milk (SCM).

SCM is a special blend of either whole or skimmed milk and sugar which is condensed through a careful evaporation process.  The end product is sweet and thick and is a staple ingredient in the production of delectable baking and confectionary delights.

Making everything creamier, richer and deliciously sweet, it is often hailed as ‘the secret ingredient’ of the baking world.  Its versatility means that it can be found in a wide range of creations from fudge, caramel and toffee sauces to banoffee pie, millionaire’s shortbread, cheesecakes and crème brulee as well as flapjacks, biscuits and ice cream, to name just a few.

Meadow Foods is the only UK manufacturer of bulk sweetened condensed milk for the food manufacturing industry and we ensure our product is free from added flavours or preservatives.  The sugar and heating process gives SCM an extended shelf life with significantly less chance of spoilage than ordinary milk.  But, perhaps the best feature of SCM is its uncomplicated and ease to use attributes.  Ready to go, it’s all geared up to caramelise, sweeten, thicken or just add delicious creaminess to an extensive array of irresistible desserts, baking delights or sauces.

The viscosity of SCM means it can be difficult to get every last drop from containers, so our team has recently designed new packaging for our 13kg Sweetened Condensed Milk and Skim, shifting from packing in bottles to a bag-in-box format.   The new packaging increases the product’s shelf life from eight weeks to around six months, enabling customers to order larger drop sizes and bringing a saving in transport costs. It’s also easier to extract the product from the new packaging, cheaper and easier to dispose of than a bulky bottle and the whole packaging takes up 10% less space than it used to.  In addition, the specially designed bag is able to stand alone without a box, making it perfect for use in high-care production areas.
