Resiliency Across the Supply Chain

Milk tank in the supply chain

In 2025, businesses face increasing pressure to ensure their supply chains are not only efficient but also resilient and sustainable. Climate-related disruptions, such as extreme weather and resource scarcity, make it harder to maintain supply chain continuity, but they also present opportunities for companies to adopt responsible practices. A resilient supply chain helps protect against disruptions, supports sustainability, and meets evolving consumer expectations.

At Meadow, we are committed to addressing climate change and have set ourselves highly ambitious sustainability goals, including achieving net-zero across all sites by 2030. We are building a supply chain that is resilient, responsible, and future-proof.

Supply chain resilience goes beyond managing disruptions. It involves the ability to adapt and continue operations sustainably even when faced with challenges. Meadow ensures resilience by integrating sustainable practices to reduce risks from natural disasters, labour challenges, and resource scarcity. This includes implementing fair labour practices, reducing reliance on finite or scarce resources, and effectively minimising waste. By focusing on fairness and sustainability, we strengthen our supply chain and make it more adaptable.

One example of this commitment is our strong support for our local dairy farmers. Keen to recognise and celebrate Meadow’s background as farmers and dairy traders, in 2023 we launched a farmer engagement programme that fosters direct communication, enabling us to understand and improve the sustainability and efficiency of our producers. By hosting regular face-to-face sessions with our farmers we can hear first hand what our producers need from Meadow, and agree on ways of working in partnership to develop and deliver our shared sustainability goals.

While there is an ethical need to deliver sustainability, there is also a commercial one. Consumers are increasingly demanding transparency and sustainability from brands, preferring sustainable products and avoiding companies with poor environmental practices and reputations. At Meadow, we prioritise transparency by sharing our sustainability goals, progress, and challenges, helping our customers and partners make informed choices and building trust in our brand. Our efforts go beyond reducing our carbon footprint; we aim to create a positive environmental and social impact with every product.

Sustainability also drives innovation at Meadow. We’ve invested in technologies that reduce waste and emissions, such as switching from plastic tubs to bags, which allows us to transport more goods per truck, and improving the durability of plastic trays, cutting 100 tonnes of carbon emissions in the process. Our milk swap programme has saved 567 tonnes of carbon emissions by reducing transportation needs.

A resilient supply chain is also about supporting people and communities. At Meadow, we prioritise employee wellbeing and offer programmes like mental health first aid. We also support communities through sustainable sourcing practices, like buying cocoa from Rainforest Alliance and Fair-Trade certified suppliers.

Our Sustainability Analyst at Meadow, Ceri Williams, says, “Meadow is committed to embedding business ethics and as a solution-based business we are always looking for innovative ways to reduce our environmental footprint. Our supply chain plays a key role in helping us and our customers to meet targets and improve our sustainability performance, and the opportunity to collaborate with likeminded partners in our supply chain to navigate the challenges they face is hugely beneficial. We are always looking for feedback to further improve, and through regular engagement and establishing each other’s priorities and challenges we’re able to share alignment in terms of goals, being fully transparent in performance and successes, and putting sustainability at the heart of everything we do as a business.”

As sustainability becomes a global priority, a resilient supply chain helps businesses meet regulatory standards, avoid fines, and fulfill their ESG goals. At Meadow, we remain dedicated to building a supply chain that is resilient, responsible, and innovative, aligned with our mission to combat climate change.
