International Women’s Day – supporting #breakthebias campaign

At Meadow Foods we are supporting this year’s International Women’s Day campaign, #breakthebias, by celebrating all the incredible and hardworking women behind both Meadow and Nimbus Foods, our Inclusions division. The Manufacturing and Food Industries are still largely male dominated, but we are trying to play our part in changing this. Almost one third of our company workforce across Meadow and Nimbus Foods are female which is on par with the latest 2021 figures for the Manufacturing Industry from the Office for National Statistics.

We are also proud that we are continually improving the number of women within our Senior and Management roles with every 1 in 3 members of our Executive team being female, and we have women represented in all key areas of our business.

Life in the Manufacturing Industry

We have collated a number of ‘Day in the Life’ stories from women who work in a variety of roles across the company.

Sophie Lyons, Marketing Manager

What does your role at Meadow Foods entail?

As Marketing Manager, my role is extremely varied. My team and I are responsible for gathering the relevant insights and knowledge from the wider market that will help guide our commercial and innovation strategy, and promoting our products and brand to both new and existing customers. We also provide support with internal marketing and employee engagement which is always fun and rewarding.

Can you tell us about your career journey, how did you get your job at Meadow Foods?

I began my career in the food industry by undertaking a work placement with Samworth Brothers whilst at university, which was an excellent experience and introduction to the world of food manufacturing. Since then, I have held positions under the Sales and Marketing function at several FMCG companies, which were all B2C and consumer focused. I have always really enjoyed consumer marketing and working for major retail brands, but I wanted to challenge myself and gain experience in B2B selling. Meadow Foods is a brilliant company to work for and although I have only been with the business for 6 months, I already feel like I have been part of the team for much longer which is testament to how welcoming and supportive my colleagues have been.

What does a typical day look like for you?

No day is the same for me at Meadow, which I like! However, I usually spend the first hour or so of my day replying to emails and planning for any meetings I may have. On some days, my diary is full of meetings with colleagues or agencies, and on others I may be working solidly on a presentation or specific project. Some weeks I am travelling around sites or visiting customers, which is always enjoyable, but I mostly tend to spend half of my week working from home and the other half working in the office, which I find to be a good balance.

What would you recommend to others looking to join the industry?

I think being passionate about food and produce is something I have found to be important when working in the food production industry, particularly in Sales and Marketing. Being willing to get stuck in and work with a wide variety of people on a daily basis is also necessary – it’s rare to find a role that operates in isolation of others! It’s crucial to keep an open mind and constantly be willing to learn; there’s always something new to discover about the industry!

Lizzie Stirling & Sigita Zadoroznaite, Export Technicians

What does your role at Meadow Foods entail?

Our role at Meadow Foods as Export Technicians requires us to supervise the tankers coming in and out of site and collate the documents for each load that day – an essential task for supporting the Planning function with managing supply and demand.

What does a typical day look like for you?

With exports it is dependent on sales as to whether we have a busy day or not. On days with lower sales, we get to help around the factory wherever is most beneficial to the company. This is interesting as we get a broader scope of the business and a better understanding of all the different factory operations. On a day with high sales, we face a challenging fast-paced environment. Some of our duties involve weighing in tankers, checking cleaning certificates, sending to the correct location for loading, issuing seals and making sure all documents are aligned.

What would you recommend to others looking to join the industry?

There is so much to learn and so much to enjoy working within the industry!

Karen Jones, National Account Manager

What does your role at Nimbus Foods entail?

My role as a National Account Manager for Nimbus, our Inclusions division, entails working with a diverse range of people, from NPD, Customer Service, Finance, factory, and QA, at all levels. This variety of people is really interesting as there is always something new to come across. On top of this, I work with some great manufacturing business, helping to produce some fabulous products that consumers enjoy – it’s great to see the finished item on retail shelves. These businesses operate across many different market categories, from Bakery to Desserts and Ice Cream, and I find working alongside a range of NPD teams and using inspiring Marketing insight to take our customers on a journey really rewarding.

Can you tell us about your career journey, how did you get your job at Nimbus Foods?

I started my career as a pastry chef but my love and passion for food was not necessarily in the kitchen, but it was about working with people to help build and create food concepts. My journey has always been in the food industry from Front House Management to Sales, which has included project managing confectionery products from concept to launch, working with some of the world’s biggest confectionery brands. I think that my diverse background and my passion for ingredients and the marketplace we work in has been fundamental in my career success to date.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Never a dull day, often fast passed and exhilarating. The company is really evolving which makes it an exciting place to work. The day can be anything from  strategy planning, working on product costings, or talking to customers about new products they require – the variety is endless!

What would you recommend to others looking to join the industry?

The food industry is very diverse, so find your passion and the rest will come naturally. Be prepared for hard work but it will always be rewarding.
